Getting a call for a job interview is certainly a step forward in getting the job you dream of, when facing a job interview at least an applicant must be able to present themselves well in addition to appearance and also polite speech and attitude.

1.     Be on time.

This often means arriving 10-15 minutes early. Interviewers are often ready before the appointment.

2.     Know the interviewer's name, spelling, and pronunciation.

Use it during the interview. If you don't know the name, call ahead and ask the secretary. Also, make a note of the secretary's name in case you need to call back. Secretaries can influence the hiring decision!

3.     Prepare some questions of your own.

There is nothing wrong with having a short list of questions and thoughts - it shows that you have done your research and want to learn more about the organization and the position.

4.     Focus.

Focus on your attributes, your transferable skills, and your willingness to learn; don't apologize for a lack of experience; describe your strengths in terms of what you can do for the organization.

5.     Listen carefully to the interviewer.

Make sure you understand the question; if not, ask for clarification or rephrase it in your own words. Answer fully and concisely. Stay on topic.

6.     Be prepared for personal questions.

Some interviewers may not know what they can and cannot legally ask. Anticipate how you will handle such questions without losing your composure.

7.     Don't expect a job offer after the first interview.

Often you will be invited back for a second or even a third interview before an offer is made several weeks later.

8.     End on a positive, enthusiastic note.

Ask what the next step will be. Thank the interviewer for his or her time and express your interest in the position. Leave quickly and politely with a handshake and a smile.

9.     No interview is complete until you follow up with a thank-you note.

Express your appreciation for the interview and, if applicable, reiterate your interest. This last step can make all the difference. Don't forget it.
